Dakshinavarti

Dakshinavarti is one of the items for puja used by the Hindus in India and also in other parts of the world to accomplish the worship of the Hindu deities. Dakshinavarti or Dakshinavarti Sankha is actually a sea conch which opens on the right side. Sea shells of differentkinds are available in the market at a very huge quantity but these sea shells open on the left side. It is very rare to find sea shells which open on the right side. In the Indian language Dakshina means the south and from the perspective of the person who holds the conch it means the right side. It is very rare that a devotee is worshiping the deities blowing a conch which opens on the right side. Dakshinavarti Sankha also has other names like Laxmi Sankha and Valampuri Sankha. The price of Dakshinavarti Sankha is also much higher than the ordinary Sanha.
Dakshinavarti Sankha is available in white colors and many of them have spectacular brown lines on it. The brown lines on the white conch makes the gate up of the conch more attractive. Dakshinavarti Sankha is the holy symbol of a very holy Hindu goddesses. Dakshinavarti Sankha symbolizes Ma Laxmi the Hindu goddesses of Wealth. The idols of Maa Laxmi always carry Dakshinavarti Sankha

in one of her hands. The pictures of Maa Laxmi also always shows this Dakshinavarti Sankha. Pious Hindus who always follow the process of worship ( Puja) very strictly keep Dakshinavarti Sankha in the separate chamber specially made for worshiping the gods and goddesses. Dakshinavarti Sankha is generally kept in a specially made locker at the time of any special worship.

Dakshinavarti Sankha is regarded by the Hindus with extreme veneration as they believe that Dakshinavarti Sankha can bring good luck for the individual and also for the family by giving them enough chances of becoming rich. It is widely believed that anybody who keeps this conch in their locker will never be want of money in his or her life. There is a rule of keeping the Dakshinavarti Sankha in the locker. This holy conch of the Hindus is supposed to keep in the locker wrapped by a white cloth. People even worship this conch in their locker by offering incense and foods and beverages like white rice and milk In the Puranas ( Hindu mythology) the Hindu gods and goddesses have been described as holding Dakshinavarti Sankha in their hands when they are in a jovial mood or when they are in the battle field. So this special kind of conch has its association with many aspects of Hinduism. It is also believed that the blowing of this shell purifies the air from any kind of evil spirit.
